Annual trips to the banks of the Murchison River, in mid-west Western Australia, are an ongoing source of inspiration. Each year artworks are made in situ and further developed in the studio. These works include large scale frottages, drawings, paintings, textile works and photography and were presented in the Continuity exhibition. I think of the trees as witnesses to history, to the force of nature through floods and droughts and to the layers of human presence in the rugged landscape of the Murchison. I'm conscious that my footprints in the sandy creek bed are just the most recent layer of experience, and that only the trees and rocks know who has walked this way before me. |
